Starts: Wednesday January 14th

Team Sign-up Deadline: Thursday January 8th @ 4 PM

Captain's Meeting: Monday January 12th @ 12 Noon; Room TBA

Bond: $50 per team; fully refunded at the end of the season so long as there are no forfeits/defaults or conduct issues

Rules:

  • Matches will be best of 3 games or 50 minutes of running time, whichever comes first

  • The first 2 games will be played to 25 points using a rally point system (must win by 2 points)

  • The third game will be played to 15 points using a rally point system (must win by 2 points, if possible; however, there is also a 17 point cap in the third game)

  • If a team wins the first 2 games, that is the end of the match. Teams can play a third game, but no score will be reported.

  • Time between games is 1 minute.

  • If your 50 minutes of running time is finished, you must end your third game. The score at that time will be the final score for the third game.

  • Games can be delayed up to 10 minutes without penalty after the scheduled start-time if teams are short on players and waiting for some to arrive. After 10 minutes, the team that is short players will be served with a forfeit.

  • Let serves are considered in if they land in the court.

  • Balls may be dug up with any part of the body, including the legs and feet.

  • There is no double hit on any first ball over the net (i.e.: setting is allowed on serve receive or on spiked balls), however the ball cannot be 'lifted'.

  • Once a ball is tossed on serve, you must hit the ball (i.e.: no letting the ball drop after you have tossed it). Result is a loss of service and a point for the opposing team.

  • You can serve from anywhere behind the end line, within an extension of the sidelines. No stepping on or over the service line.

  • There is a maximum of three contacts on a side (except blocking). A double hit results in a side-out & point to the opposing team. If two players from the same team contact the ball simultaneously, it is considered as one contact.

  • The team which has performed an actual block shall have the right to three more contacts in order to return the ball. Any players participating in a block shall have the right to make the next contact.

  • Blockers may reach over the net once an attack-hit (an attempt to play the ball over the net) has occurred.

  • The serve may not be blocked or spiked.

  • A player touching the net while playing the ball is considered a foul. EXCEPTION: It is not a foul if a ball is driven into the net causing the net to touch an opposing player.

  • A spiker may follow through over the net as long as first contact with the ball is made on that player's side of the net.

  • A player may not scoop or hold the ball, or allow it to come momentarily to rest on his/ her hands, fingers, or body.

  • Players may not grab the pole, supports, or cable, while the ball is in play to avoid a penalty ("to gain an advantage").

  • A maximum of 5 serves per server is allowed at one time.

  • Regular volleyball rules apply unless otherwise stated in these rules or notes.

  • Campus Rec has no officials for volleyball, so please call your own violations (net violations, held ball, double hit). If you are honest, there’s a better chance your opponent will be honest.

  • Games will be played using a net height set between Men’s and Women's Varsity regulations.

  • You must have a minimum of 4 players (maximum of 6) on the court to play a game. If you have fewer than 4 players, the opposing team has the right to claim a win by forfeit.

  • There must be 2 female players on the court at all times.. If you have fewer than 2 female players on the court, the opposing team has the right to claim a win by forfeit.

  • Varsity volleyball athletes are allowed to play (a max of 1 male and 1 female per team); however, they are only allowed to jump in their attack if the attack is from the back row.

  • Rosters must be finalized by the end of the first week of play

  • Substitutions are done via rotation on serve. The point of rotating on or off can be decided by the each team at each game.

  • One person from each team will be designated to keep score of the game. This way someone will always know the score.

  • Team service for the first and third game is determined by coin toss. The team losing the toss chooses which side they would like to play on.

  • Teams will switch sides between the first and second games, and after the first team reaches 8 points in the third.

  • Players must participate in a minimum of 75% of their team's round-robin games in order to be eligible to participate in any playoff matches.
